molise
(visit more italian regions)
Part of the Abruzzo region until 1963, Molise is the youngest Italian
region. It borders on Campania, Puglia, Abruzzo, and Lazio and is divided
into two provinces: Campobasso and Isernia. Isolated mountains and a chaotic
array of hills have made communications difficult and resulted in a profound
state of isolation in this sweet, safe, and quiet land. Even Campobasso, the
administrative center, boasts less than 50,000 inhabitants. Subsistence
farming, rather than tourism, remains the region's principal economic
strength. Nevertheless, some holiday resorts have sprouted and a number of
beautiful beaches line the Adriatic coast side.

rock of ages
One Molise native established a business that his grandson still operates
today. But it's been a rocky climb...
experience molise cuisine
Molise's historic and political connection to Abruzzo ended when Molise became
an independent region in 1963, but it still shares many of the same
culinary traditions of Abruzzo with a nod to the south. There are, however, few dishes unique to Molise.
