New York has its big band Mondays, Chicago has its Von Freeman Tuesdays, and L.A. has its own tradition of John Pisano's Guitar Night Tuesdays at Spazios. Pisano returned from a tour to standing room only to deliver another impeccable guitar workshop with guest Pat Kelley. Playing together like old friends, Kelley with his thick, gutsy tone complementing Pisano's crisp, arid sound, they breezed through classics like "West Coast Blues" and "In Your Own Sweet Way." Each solo and accompaniment was an exercise in taste. Holding and bending notes, alternating between strumming and picking, the two gentlemen gave the appreciative crowd the impression of listening in on a conversation between sages. Amicable give and takes, such as on the trading choruses on the warm "Embraceable You," were the epitome of sensitivity and style. The night was not all warm fuzzies, however, as Pisano and Kelley enjoyed friendly battles on the uptempo "All of You" and Grant Green's "Miss Ann's Tempo," The band raced through the bebop lines with joyful abandon, challenging each other. Don't take the musicians here for granted and enjoy Pisano.
